Most Christians pray for power they already possess but never recognize they have it.
I discovered this truth fifty-four years ago when a single verse from Philemon revolutionized everything I believed about faith, God, and Christian living. The revelation didn’t come through spectacular signs or mystical experiences. It came through understanding one profound reality: the breakthrough you’re seeking isn’t about getting something new from God but recognizing what He’s already placed within you.
The Verse That Changes Everything
Paul writes to Philemon about his runaway slave Onésime, who had fled to Rome, encountered Paul, and surrendered his life to Christ. But buried in Paul’s recommendation letter lies a transformational truth that most believers miss entirely.
“I pray that your partnership in the faith may be effective in recognizing every good thing we have in Christ” (Philemon 1:6, NIV).
The word “partnership” here means communion. It’s what happens when I share what’s in my heart with you right now. But notice Paul doesn’t pray for Philemon to receive more faith or develop stronger spiritual disciplines. He prays that Philemon’s faith would become “effective” through recognition.
Recognition implies you already possess what you’re discovering. You cannot recognize something you don’t have.
Therefore, the power that transforms your circumstances, heals your body, and overcomes your struggles isn’t locked away in heaven waiting for the right prayer or sufficient holiness. It’s already resident within your born-again spirit, dormant until you acknowledge its presence.

This contradicts everything most of us learned about Christian living. We were taught that God has power but hasn’t done anything yet. We believed healing, victory, and joy come from outside to inside. But Scripture reveals the opposite: everything you need for the rest of your Christian life was deposited in your spirit the moment you were born again.
The Soil Principle
Think about soil for a moment. God anticipated every human need and embedded the solutions within the earth before we ever recognized we needed them. Sand can be heated and transformed into glass so clear you can see through it. Minerals can be extracted and forged into steel stronger than stone. Oil beneath the ground powers our civilization.
Everything above ground was originally in the ground. God provided before we asked.
But soil requires a seed to activate its potential.
Similarly, when you were born again, God placed within your spirit the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20). You received the fullness of divine nature (Colossians 2:9-10). You became complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10). You were made righteous and holy (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Not partially. Completely.
The resurrection power of God isn’t something you must pray down from heaven. It’s something you must learn to recognize and release from within your spirit.
This principle revolutionized my ministry in Russia. Instead of trying to become good enough for God to use me, I began operating from the reality of who I already was in Christ. The focus shifted from my inadequacies to Christ’s adequacy within me. My preaching transformed from religious striving to relationship overflow.

Breaking Free from the Performance Trap
Satan, the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10), constantly points out what you’re doing wrong. Religious people join his choir, highlighting your failures and shortcomings. But if you wait until you perform perfectly before expecting God to move through your life, you’ll never step into your calling.
I tell ministry students this truth: if you become so filled with understanding of what Christ has accomplished in you, when you look at friends, family, and coworkers, you’ll think, “I cannot imagine them not knowing what I know.”
That’s an authentic relationship with God. It’s recognizing who He is inside you. Then ministry flows like a river of life rather than religious duty.
The Word of God serves as the catalyst that activates what’s already within you. Just as a seed triggers the soil’s potential, God’s Word awakens the spiritual realities dormant in your born-again spirit.
But here’s the challenge: if you spend four to five hours daily consuming the world’s negativity through news, social media, and entertainment, then counter it with a ten-minute devotional, you’ll remain spiritually anemic. Your mind will focus on problems rather than solutions, lack rather than abundance, symptoms rather than healing.
Scripture promises that God will keep you in perfect peace when your mind is steadfast on Him (Isaiah 26:3). But this requires intentional, sustained focus on His Word rather than the world’s chaos.
You can train yourself to meditate on Scripture throughout the day. The same part of you that worries about finances can learn to feast on God’s promises. It’s a choice. It’s a discipline. But it’s possible.
Therefore, the Christian life isn’t about getting more of God but discovering what you already possess and learning to release it through recognition, meditation, and faith-filled confession.
Your breakthrough isn’t coming from heaven. It’s already within you, waiting for recognition.
Transform Your Faith Today:
Stop praying for what God has already given you. Start recognizing what Christ has already accomplished in you. Begin each day by declaring these truths: “I have the mind of Christ. I am more than a conqueror. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in me.” Then spend time in God’s Word, allowing Scripture to activate the spiritual realities already deposited in your spirit. Remember: faith works through recognition, not petition. The victory you’re seeking is closer than you think because most Christians pray for power they already possess but never recognize they have it.
